چکیده

Traditional resource economics has been criticised for assuming too high elasticities of substitution, not observing material balance principles and relying too much on planner solutions to obtain long-term growth. By analysing a multi-sector R&Dbased endogenous growth model with exhaustible natural resources, labour, knowledge, and physical capital as inputs, the present paper addresses this critique. We study transitional dynamics and the long-term growth path and identify conditions under which firms keep spending on research and development. We demonstrate that long-run growth can be sustained under free market conditions even when elasticities of substitution between capital and resources are low and the supply of physical capital is limited, which seems to be crucial for today’s sustainability debate.

Dynamic Investment in Extraction Capacity of Exhaustible Resources

This paper applies real options theory into a resource extraction problem with capacity constraints and demand uncertainty. The producer decides on the optimal rate of extraction and the optimal time to build further capacity simultaneously. It is shown that previous results which suggest that extraction capacity should be built at the beginning, are not necessarily true under uncertainty. The ...

Sustainable Development, Renewable Resources and Technological Progress

Conflicts between optimality and sustainability are typical in the literature on sustainable development. Using the ‘‘capital-resource’’ growth model, Pezzey and Withagen (1998, Scandinavian Journal of Economics 100 (2), 513–527) have proved that if natural resources are exhaustible, the time-path of consumption is single-peaked, declining from some point in time onwards. This paper extends the...

Estimate of Armington substitution elasticity for fishery products in Iran

The price transmission from the international market to the domestic market of tunas was investigated in the present research. For this purpose, the elasticity of substitution between tuna imports with goods produced in Iran (Armington Elasticity) was calculated. Armington elasticity reflects a degree of substitution between commodities produced domestically and those produced abroad. A greater...

Natural Resource Economics, Planetary Boundaries and Strong Sustainability

Earth systems science maintains that there are nine “planetary boundaries” that demarcate a sustainable, safe operating space for humankind for essential global sinks and resources. Respecting these planetary boundaries represents the “strong sustainability” perspective in economics, which argues that some natural capital may not be substituted and are inviolate. In addition, the safe operating...

Estimate of Armington substitution elasticity for fishery products in Iran

Abstract Nowadays, fishery and aquaculture products form an important fraction of the protein requirement and food of many people on the earth. The hike in prices of these essential products seems necessary owing to the increase in demand and consumption of these products in the country. The price transmission from the international market to the domestic market of tunas was  investigated in t...
